2010 Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra’s 28th Anniversary Concert 肇風中樂團二十八週年音樂會《華夏清韵綻新葩音樂會》
The Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra is a community-based musical group. Established in 1982 by a group of enthusiastic musicians, the Orchestra is the largest and longest-running Chinese Orchestra in Australia and has become a focal point for the development of Chinese music in Australia.
‘Chao’ means ‘beginning’ or ‘to initiate’, and ‘Feng’ is an ancient word for ‘culture’ or ‘music’. The orchestra is the first Chinese orchestra in Australia, and the aim is to promote traditional Chinese culture and music in Australia.
The orchestra stages its own concerts in Melbourne and has been active in providing entertainment for main stream multicultural events, community events, schools, charity events and private functions. It is also active in making cultural exchanges with other Chinese orchestras from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Shanghai.
The orchestra is an incorporated cultural organisation that is independent and not-for-profit, supporting its activities with membership fees and revenue generated from performances. The Orchestra also regularly applies for, and on occasion succeeds in achieving, funding from private foundations as well as State and Commonwealth arts funding bodies.
Members come from all walks of life and many different backgrounds, today, Chao Feng has 50 members, and most of them are young members.
Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra wishes to extend its thanks to Dr Nicholas Tochka, Dr Catherine Falk, Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne for providing the Orchestra with a rehearsal venue from the date the Orchestra was established.
