Melodies Reflecting Mountains and Rivers
Sunday, 23 August 2026
Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra proudly presents its 44th Anniversary Concert, ‘Melodies Reflecting Mountains and Rivers’. A musical journey through the landscapes, cultures, and traditions that have shaped generations of Chinese cultural heritage.
Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra, founded in 1982, is Australia’s oldest and largest registered non-profit Chinese orchestra. For more than four decades, the orchestra has been dedicated to promoting Chinese musical culture. Through concerts, community performances and international cultural exchange activities, it showcases the unique charm of Chinese traditional music to Australia’s multicultural communities and actively fosters cultural connections between East and West.
This year’s programme invites audiences on a musical journey across diverse regions and cultural traditions. From the folk charm of Sichuan and the vibrant spirit of Northern Shaanxi to the vast and majestic expanses of the Mongolian grasslands, each work reflects the distinctive character and traditions of its region. Together, these musical landscapes form a rich tapestry of history, culture and human stories, offering audiences a vivid glimpse into the depth and vitality of Chinese music.
The concert is led by Mr Yat Ping Chan, conductor of the Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra. Over many years, Mr Chan has played a pivotal role in shaping the orchestra’s artistic development, guiding it towards ever-greater excellence through his profound musical knowledge, extensive conducting experience and passion for Chinese music. His dedication and leadership continue to inspire generations of performers and audiences alike.
The concert will also mark an important milestone for a dedicated young musician Mr Jinghao Lim, who will make his debut on the podium as a conductor while also appearing as soloist in Shaoqin Concerto Capriccio No. 2 – Mongolian Fantasy. Having devoted himself to Chinese music in recent years, Jinghao has developed a distinctive understanding of traditional music and its interpretation, which will be reflected in this performance. An accomplished erhu performer, he has received numerous awards at international music competitions, including the Silver Award at the 6th Dunhuang Cup Chinese Erhu Competition.
The concert will also feature Ms Yuyan (Monica) Tang, an accomplished guzheng soloist, performing the concerto The Tale of Robe of Clouds. Currently pursuing a PhD at Western Sydney University, Monica is active throughout Australia and Asia as a performer, educator and researcher. Monica is dedicated to sharing the richness of Chinese music with audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds. Drawing on her profound technical mastery and unique artistic vision, she will reveal the rich emotions and poetic imagery that lie at the heart of this evocative work.
Dizi performer Ms Kuan-Yu (Vivian) Chen will present the beloved classic Dizi Solo – Orchids in Spring. Having studied under renowned dizi virtuoso Mr Qiuming Dong and a prominent member of the Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra for many years, Vivian is a familiar and much-loved presence on stage. Through her performance, she will guide audiences on a journey from hardship to renewal, celebrating resilience, perseverance and hope.
Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra’s annual anniversary concert is a cultural feast not to be missed by lovers of Chinese music in Melbourne. We warmly invite audiences of all backgrounds to join us on a journey through music, traversing magnificent landscapes, enduring traditions and timeless stories, while discovering the richness and splendour of Chinese culture.
